- Renee Ellis Goldsberry was born on January 2, 1971, in San Jose, California. Betty Sanders was an industrial psychologist, and her father was a scientist and physicist who also worked as an executive in the automobile industry. She grew up in Houston and Detroit and is of mixed race.
- She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in theater from Carnegie Mellon University in 1993 after graduating from Cranbrook Kingswood School in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan.
